Bandits led by Matt the Mute enter a bar and kill multiple people. Randy Bowers comes to town and is framed by Matt the Mute, who is working with the sheriff, who doesn't know that Matt is really a criminal. Matt the Mute writes out everything he wants to say. Randy escapes with the help of Sally Rogers, the niece of the dead owner of the bar. Bowers runs from the sheriff, and ends up in the cave in which the bandits have their hideout. They kidnap Sally, who escapes with the help of Bowers. Matt the Mute is killed when he enters the bar, which is filled with explosives, and the niece marries Randy.。历经楚汉争霸、文景之治，汉王朝迎来了如日中天的鼎盛时刻。少年登基的汉武帝刘彻一扫祖父辈无为而治的政治方针，海纳百川，广招贤能，一时间主父偃、张汤、卫青、霍去病、董仲舒、汲黯等名臣将相接踵而至。在这些能臣中间，东方朔是一个地位颇有些奇妙的人。他出身山东，学贯五车，满腹经纶，早年通过平阳公主引荐得以面上。但是皇帝似乎对他颇有忌惮，既采纳他的策论奇谋，又不对其委以重用。既不将其纳为栋梁重臣，又不让他离开京城。内心充满不平的东方朔只能以诙谐面孔示人，这正是他可悲可叹、无可奈何的命运…… 本片根据东方龙吟的长篇小说《智圣东方朔》改编。。故事发生在1938年5月6日，这个日子无论是对罗马人民或是对平凡的家庭主妇安东尼泰（索菲娅·罗兰 Sophia Loren 饰）来说，都是不平凡的一天。当日，独裁者希特勒和墨索里尼来到罗马参加高峰会议，无限吹捧他们奉行的法西斯主义，在慷慨激昂的讲话的蛊惑人心的词语之中，整个城市陷入了一片疯狂的躁动。 然而，这狂热的一切似乎都和在家中洒扫整理的安东尼泰无关，此刻的她正陷于深深的忧郁之中，被困在枯燥的婚姻和苍白的生活内无法自拔。这时，她邂逅了新搬来的邻居加布瑞乐（马塞洛·马斯楚安尼 Marcello Mastroianni 饰），在极短的时间内，两人相知相恋，迸发出了巨大的激情，可黑夜过后，一切重归平静，仿佛什么都没有发生过。。
