2011年にテレビ放送された幾原邦彦監督によるオリジナルアニメ「輪（まわ）るピングドラム」のテレビシリーズ全24話を再構築し、新作パートを追加して前後編で劇場公開する2部作の後編。高倉家の双子の兄弟・冠葉と晶馬が病気の妹・陽毬の命を救うために謎の「ピングドラム」を探す物語を描きつつ、新作パートには子どもの姿の冠葉と晶馬が登場し、プリンセス・オブ・ザ・クリスタルに似た衣装をまとった荻野目桃果や、新キャラクターである謎の赤ちゃんペンギン・プリンチュペンギンと出会う。さらに実写映像などの新たな要素も加わり、テレビシリーズとは異なる視点で物語を描き出す。。An uplifting documentary about coping with inoperable cancer may sound unlikely, but here it is.
