Greece, in the 1920's, is occupied by the Turks. The country is in turmoil with entire villages uprooted. The site of the movie is a Greek village that conducts a passion play each year. The leading citizens of the town, under the auspices of the Patriarch, choose those that will play the parts in the Passion. A stuttering shepherd is chosen to play Jesus. The town butcher (who wanted to be Jesus) is chosen as Judas. The town prostitute is chosen as Mary Magdalene. The rest of the disciples are also chosen. As the movie unfolds, the Passion Play becomes a reality. A group of villagers, uprooted by the war and impoverished, arrive at the village led by their priest. The wealthier citizens of the town want nothing with these people and manipulate a massacre. In the context of the 1920's each of the characters plays out their biblical role in actuality.。上世纪初，军阀混战，世道离乱。作为连接大千世界的重要枢纽，十里洋场更是一个鱼龙混杂、黑白颠倒的所在。生活在最低层的码头工人林四海（刘家辉饰）终日劳苦，不见出头天，但是脑筋活络的他抓住一个千载难逢的机会。他凭借三寸不烂之舌帮助军阀出特派专员郑志成（王戎饰）脱险，从而得以脱离底层，成为一名警察，后凭着脑瓜灵光成为局长的副官。欲望已被勾起，林四海无法停止脚步，他寻机拉拢警长下水，自己则成为黑白两道通吃的头面人物，与大家姐梅宝（楚湘云饰）雄霸码头，风头无量。正所谓天下大乱，遂使竖子成名本片根据江之南的原著改编。。1943年秋天，东北被日本鬼子侵占了，东北抗联部队奉党中央之命参加抗日战争，二方为扩充各自的势力，都对着狼窝山上的土匪窝相互较着劲。而土匪头目许金贵带着宁做鸡头不当牛后的思想，最终在日本鬼子劝降不成而被日本军恼羞成怒地把狼窝山给毁灭了，使得从抗联部队前来的党代表赵彦、老李头也被当作“肉票”关进集中营。关进集中营的日子，鬼子的残忍变本加厉。一个大风大雨之夜，由赵彦等人策划的越狱暴动开始了，冲出层层重围的赵彦、许金贵、“马脸”、金娃、龟田等人飞奔着越过中苏边境，刚刚逃出，却又被苏军部队瓦丽娅抓住，被投进苏军监狱。不久苏联政府准备对日宣战，美国在日本的广岛、长崎投下了原子弹，日本无条件投降。赵彦终于和瓦丽娅在一起了。但由于没有《侨民证》和《国民证》又得面对新的流亡。在贫病交加和生活极端的困境中，赵彦他们在辗转流亡了十来个年头，再也无力与死神抗衡，长眠于西伯利亚的土地上。许金贵在坚持下，回到了祖国的怀抱，当他再次来到当年逃过边境的那片洼地时，山野到处盛开着烂漫的山花，而山谷里却静得听不到一丝风声。。
